Shiur with Sonia Zafer-Smith – 20th July 8pm – “Cities of Shelter and Sheltering from War”
The talk will explore how the biblical arei miklat – cities of refuge – relate to 20th century notions of shelter and national duty in Israel, through the re-appropriation of the word miklat into modern Hebrew to refer to public bomb shelters (miklatim). Bomb shelters dot the Israeli landscape, and are used both during war and in people’s day-to-day lives. And outside of war they are used for all sorts of activities – ranging from social clubs to nightclubs.
The talk is open to everyone interested in anthropology, ethnography, war, bomb shelters, and civilian experiences of conflict in Israel.
